Local Hazard Mitigation Plan
In early 2018 the City of Redondo Beach began the process of updating its Local Hazard Mitigation Plan, or LHMP. This plan will help create a safer community for residents, businesses, and visitors. The LHMP allows public safety officials and city staff, elected officials, and members of the public understand the threats from natural and human-caused hazards in our community. The plan will also recommend specific actions to proactively decrease these threats before disasters occur. The Draft LHMP is available for public review and comment through October 31, 2019. On Tuesday, June 18, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at a regularly scheduled meeting of the Redondo Beach City Council, the City Council will be conducting a public hearing regarding proposed user fee changes for the City Clerk, Fire, Community Services and Community Development departments.

At a public hearing on January 15, 2019, the City Council unanimously approved the South Bay Galleria Improvement Project. The project will include remodeling of the existing mall, a new 150-room hotel, 300 residential apartment units, up to 175,000-square feet of commercial office space and a central outdoor open space area featuring a skate park. Over the past year and a half the GPAC has been working hard exploring land use and other issues that will inform and shape our General Plan Update. This past weekend the City hosted its first General Plan Update Community Meeting at the Perry Park Teen Center—thank you to all who attended! At the Community Meeting we unveiled the GPAC’s land use change options for the focus areas of the City and walked through the opportunities and issues that informed the options for each focus area. We need your input to help us further refine what changes, if any, should be made to the City’s Land Use Plan.

The Redondo Beach City Council adopted Ordinance 3180-18 prohibiting the use of motorized leaf blowers, city-wide. (Redondo Beach Municipal Code Section 4-24.507(c)). The Ordinance will be effective after August 10, 2018. The first meeting of the City's General Plan Advisory Committee (GPAC) took place on Thursday April 27, 2017. It was a productive meeting, which included member introductions and an overview of the Brown Act, General Plan 101, and the update process. Members now have guiding principals and basic understanding of what their roles will be as the process evolves over the next 10 months. The meeting also included City staff introductions, and was facilitated by representatives of Placeworks, Inc. a highly skilled and respected firm in the area of urban planning and land use. Placeworks will continue to provide facilitation services for each meeting. Members of the general public also attended and observed the meeting from the audience seats. The next GPAC meeting will take place on Thursday June 8th, 2017 at 7:00pm in the Main Library 2nd Floor Conference Room. Subsequent meetings are tentatively scheduled for the last Thursday of each month.

The Harbor Commission began consideration of the Waterfront Project on June 13, 2016, and concluded its consideration on August 8, 2016, certifying the Final EIR and approving the project entitlements. An appeal of the Harbor Commission decision was filed, and the project was considered by the City Council at a public hearing held on Tuesday October 18, 2016 at 6:00pm, at which time the City Council denied the appeal and sustained the Harbor Commission approvals.
