FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM TAX INCENTIVE
The Redondo Beach Fire Department would like to inform the commercial building owners in the City about an important new life and property saving provision in the recent tax reform. The provision incentivizes owners to retrofit their buildings with fire sprinkler systems.
The recently passed tax-reform package (P.L. 115-97, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act) allows the cost of fire sprinkler retrofits to be deducted as a Section 179 expense. Installation of sprinkler systems in existing buildings will now be more affordable. This change will benefit the community in the following ways:
- Fire sprinklers save lives by allowing occupants to safely escape
- Fire sprinklers can help control a fire from spreading, causing less property damage
- Only the sprinkler closest to the fire will activate, spraying water directly on the fire
- Surrounding rooms are protected from fire, heat, and smoke damage
This tax policy change allows businesses, restaurants, bars and other establishments to protect employees, customers, property and firefighters. The fire department encourages building owners to speak with their tax professionals for details about the new tax laws and their specific effects. The National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) has provided additional information about the tax reform on the attached pdf. If you have additional questions, please contact the Redondo Beach Fire Prevention Division.
