Patrol Division A includes six units which provide support to other police programs and operations. The major responsibilities of Patrol Division A include day watch patrol, the Gang Enforcement Team, the Traffic Unit, and the Community Police Officer Unit.
Traffic Unit
The Traffic Unit is directly responsible for keeping our streets safe. The unit itself is staffed by 6 motorcycle police officers and 1 riding motorcycle police sergeant. Our traffic officers work a 10 hour shift, 7 days a week. The Traffic Unit also coordinates several special events throughout the year.
Report Traffic Concerns
If you should have a traffic related problem in your neighborhood and require police assistance. You can also call the Traffic Concern Line at 310-937-6605. The Traffic Unit will assign an investigator to your complaint and contact you for additional information if necessary.
Community Policing Unit
Relations between the Police Department and the community are extremely important. This union serves as a catalyst of information to better serve the members of this great community. The Redondo Beach Police Department Community Based Police Officer Team consists of the following members and their respective areas of responsibility.
Special Weapons & Tactics
The S.W.A.T. Team is an organization of Redondo Beach Police Officers who have received highly specialized training. This team is often called upon to respond to crimes in progress, barricaded suspects and any other call for service that requires their expertise.
Gang Enforcement Team
The Redondo Beach Police Department has experienced a variety of gang-related criminal activities beginning in the 1940s. Gang related crime has now come to encompass many factions such as: skinhead gangs, transitory gang problems, tagging crews, prison gangs and motorcycle outlaw gangs that are opening new chapters in the regional South Bay area.
The Department traditionally worked in a reactive fashion to the gang issue. It was not until the 1980s when the Department fielded a full time gang unit. This team working with limited resources became an asset to the organization, and to Los Angeles County law enforcement agencies by solving dozens of gang related crimes.
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Redondo Beach Police Department Gang Enforcement Team (G.E.T.) is to reduce gang related crime and violence, and to enhance public safety and the quality of life within the community. This strategy begins with inter-agency and multi-disciplinary approaches including full continuum of anti-gang programs involving suppression/enforcement, intervention/diversion and education/prevention.
The G.E.T. Team will work in collaborative fashion with other law enforcement agencies such as probation, parole, prosecution, schools, business and community resources to find long term solutions to the gangproblem.
Crossing Guards
Crossing Guards are part time civilian employees of the City of Redondo Beach under the jurisdiction and supervision of the Police Department. They are not Police Officers and possess only that authority which is granted by law to any other citizen.
Crossing Guards supervise, control, and assist children in crossing the street safely at specific locations. The presence of Crossing Guards at selected intersections tends to prevent unsafe and unlawful acts by pedestrians and motorists. Crossing Guards are assigned to control and direct child pedestrians, ensuring safety at their assigned locations.
Assignment as a School Crossing Guard is an important traffic safety segment of the Police Department. School Crossing Guards protect the lives of children and teach them sound safety practices. Sincere interest in the job is appreciated especially by parents. School Crossing Guards will be under the functional supervision of the Crossing Guard Coordinator. This Coordinator is responsible for the supervision, training, and equipment of the Crossing Guards. Please find below the active Crossing Guard Schedule. Although all attempts have been made to assure its accuracy, please be aware of unexpected changes.
D.U.I. Team
Traffic collisions involving drivers who are Driving Under the Influence (D.U.I.) are on the rise. Contrary to popular belief, it is very easy to become impaired despite what you may believe to be your tolerance levels. Always have a designated driver when you plan to drink socially. Resources and information about this can be found at : D.U.I. help.
The Redondo Beach Police Department takes D.U.I. offenses very seriously. We have deployed a specialized team to help prevent and detect those drivers who are impaired. This team is comprised of Redondo Beach Police Officers. The team often work in conjunction with the South Bay Regional D.U.I. Task Force, a team of Police Officers from different jurisdictions who unite to enforce the D.U.I. laws.
