The Beach Cities Health
District (BCHD) MRC is a volunteer unit supported by the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services and the Office of the Surgeon General that supplements
medical and mental health services during large-scale emergencies. In addition
to assisting during emergencies, BCHD MRC draws from the talents of its
volunteers to provide a variety of ongoing health services and promote emergency
preparedness. Thus, BCHD MRC has three priorities:
1)Supplement local
medical and mental health services during a large-scale emergency
2)In collaboration
with BCHD, provide various health services such as community lectures and
screenings
3)Promote and
facilitate individual emergency preparedness. In order to fulfill these
priorities, BCHD MRC volunteers accomplish the following:
Partner with
many local and state-level organizations to ensure this unit is highly trained
and knowledgeable during a disaster response to a large-scale emergency.
Attend a wide
variety of trainings such as psychological first aid, START triage, and weapons
of mass destruction.
Participate in
fully functional drills and exercises with the Redondo Beach Community Emergency
Response Team (CERT), City of Redondo Beach, Los Angeles County and the State of
California.
Provide a
variety of health education lectures to the community ranging from stress
reduction workshops to diabetes management.
