REDONDO BEACH SAILING ACADEMY
THE ASA CHALLENGE
EXPERIENCED SAILORS TAKE NOTE

You need not enroll in a course of instruction to receive the internationally recognized ASA certification. Credentials will be awarded upon successful completion of the appropriate examination. Challenge the standards and receive the credentials you deserve to back up your experience. Each standard is a level of achievement and prerequisite for the next level.

MANDATORY FOR ALL BASIC STUDENTS:
SWIM TEST
Test consists of treading water fully clothed with shoes for 5 minutes and swim a minimum of 25 yards without help. Wear old clothes and bring a windbreaker, towel, and change of clothing.

DOCKSIDE
A two-hour jump on your class. GET YOUR BOOKS AND ASA PACKETS and ask questions about the program review of nautical terms, boat rigging and sail theory; THE SAILBOAT AND THE WIND! See demonstration of boat maneuvers you will be expected to perform. Parking available near the Harbormaster's Office.

Adult Classes
SMALL CENTER BOARD BOAT SAILING

ASA STD # 110, Part 1
Fee: $200 per person/per class of 2/ $300/Private
BASIC SAILING (Harbor Only) Uses Lido 14
5 Weeks/12 Hours


Prerequisite: Dockside and passing the swim test.

A great introduction to the basics of sailing and boating safety. Instruction will cover nautical terminology, rigging and unrigging the boat, leaving and returning to the dock and more. A manual Text book and the official International ASA Log Book are included with the class. Upon completion of this course a sailing certificate and a "crew" rating are obtained.

ASA STD # 110, Part 2
Fee: $200 per person / per class of 2/Class of 2, $300/Private
INTERMEDIATE SAILING (Harbor & Ocean) Uses Lido 14
4 Weeks/12 Hours


Prerequisite: Pass Part 1 or Proficiency examination and the swim test.
This more advanced course will introduce you to coastal navigation and ocean sailing. Specific units include reefing, aerodynamic principles, weather information, rough weather sailing, single handling, and mooring. A sailing manual is included with the class. Upon completion of this course, the ASA SD # 110 seal and a "skipper" rating are obtained, allowing participants to rent the Lido 14 sailboats through the Redondo Beach Sailing Club.

ASA STD #111, (Harbor & Ocean)
Fee: $245/Private
ADVANCED SAILING (Uses Coronado 15)
4 Weeks/12 hours
Prerequisite: STD #110 or ASA Challenge and pass the swim test.


High Performance Techniques in a planing keelless boat for the more agile and adventuresome sailor. This course will introduce you to advanced techniques of boat handling IN STRONGER WINDS, including the use of the toestraps, trapeze, and tiller extension. State last level taken, date, location and instructor.

LARGE KEEL BOAT SAILING

ASA STD #101
Fee: $250 per person / per class of 2/3/$350/Private
BASIC KEEL BOAT SAILING (Uses Cal 25)
5 weeks/12 hours
Prerequisite: Dockside and passing the swim test.


This course will teach you to day sail a boat of approximately 20-26 feet in moderate wind and sea without supervision. Some of the topics covered will be The Basic Boat, hardware and nautical terms, Skipper and Crew Responsibilities, U.S.C.G Requirements. Rigging, knots, converting wind power to sail power, sail trim, starting the Cal 25 outboard, getting underway, Rules of the Road, tacking, jibing, points of sail, man overboard and docking. A textbook, the official International ASA Log Book and additional sailing materials will be included with the class. Upon completion of this course, ASA rating and seal are obtained.

ASA STD #103
Fee: $300, per person / per class of 2/3/ $450/Private
BASIC COASTAL CRUISING
(Uses CAL 25 and / or CAL 227) 6 Weeks/18 hours
Prerequisite: ASA STD #101 or ASA Challenge and the Swim test.


By now you are no longer a landlubber; maybe you are even thinking of becoming a "Skipper", of a 20 to 30 foot auxiliary sailboat in moderate winds and sea; or a bona fide "Crew Member: with a specialty. Upon completion of this course, ASA rating and seal are obtained and at instructors discretion the candidates will be eligible to rent the CAL-25 through the Redondo Beach Sailing Club.

ASA STD #104
Fee: 325 per person / per class of 2/3
BAREBOAT CHARTERING
Fee: $475/Private
(Intermediate Coastal Cruising)
Uses CAL 227 2 days, 4 hour. Pre-sail seminar
Prerequisite: ASA STD #101 & #103 or ASA Challenges and Swim test.


This course will introduce you to a more advanced cruising standard for individuals with some cruising experience. The course is taught aboard a Jensen CAL 227 equipped with an inboard diesel engine and all the boat systems required to make a safe passage. Topics will include knowledge of boat systems, and daily maintenance check procedures for the engine, electrical systems, VHF radio, stove, marine, head and electronic instruments and more. At the end of this course the students will have acted as skippers and crew on a live-aboard cruise of at least 48 hours and they will be prepared to act as skipper and crew of a 30 to 50 foot sail boat, sailing by day in coastal waters. Upon completion of this course, ASA rating and seal are obtained and at instruction's discretion the candidate will be eligible to rent the CAL 227 through the Redondo Beach Sailing Club.

ASA STD #105
Fee: $100, 6 weeks Coastal Navigation

Designed for the armchair sailor as well as a TUNE-UP for the active, on-the water, advanced sailor. Included will be the use of charts and charts tools. Student fee includes: The ASA Log Book, Coastal Navigation hand outs and NOAA test chart, Registered CON written exam, ASA certification and the internationally recognized seal of successful completion.

THE REDONDO BEACH SAILING CLUB, INC.
The Redondo Beach Sailing Club, Inc. is a non-profit organization designed to offer recreational boating activities and encourage safe boating skills to local residents. Many activities such as  sailing cruises in Large Boats, skippered by Club Members, to Catalina and the Channel Islands several times a year.

Memberships include: Full Membership - persons who are 18 years of age or older and have completed Both basic and intermediate sailing classes (ASA STD #110, or #103, #104 and #105) or have passed the appropriate ASA Challenge. This membership entitles you to full rental privileges of the City's Hunter 14, Coronado 15's, CAL-25 and CAL 227. Associate Membership: Those who do not meet all the qualifications for full membership. This membership entitles you to participate in all sailing activities, but does not entitle you to rent the City's boats. Associate members Must have completed basic sailing with the City. Membership dues are $100.00 per year.

SAILING INSTRUCTORS

Barry Christensen (ASA BKB) - studied sailing and navigation through the San Pedro Adult School and US Power Squadron. He is a teacher for the Manhattan Beach City School District. Holds a B.A. in psychology from Cal State Dominguez Hills and a Seamanship Certificate from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Rafael Fernandez (ASA BBC/CON)  He is a member of the Board of Directors at the Redondo Beach Yacht Club, owns and races a Hunter 30' sail boat. Learned to sail in the mountain lakes of Guatemala and has sailed in the Great Lakes, the Caribbean and the Aegean Sea. President and Racing Chairman of the Redondo Beach Sailing club, former Membership Chairman. Holds a Seamanship certificate from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Ed Neubauer (ASA BKB) - is a retired elementary school teacher in Hawthorne. He has a Masters Degree in Education and has taught for the Recreation Department for many years. Holds a Seamanship Certificate from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Fred Williams (ASA BKB) - is a member of the Redondo Beach Sailing Club and has taught for several years. He holds a B.S. degree in marketing and small business entrepreneurship from CSUDH. Holds a Seamanship Certificate from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Ted Winer’s:

US Sailing Small Boat Sailing Level 1 Instructor. Racing experience ranging from dinghies and beach catamarans (Lasers and Hobie-16s) to sport boats and monohulls (Melges-30 and Davidson-52). Skippered monohull and catamaran charter boats in the British Virgin Island, the Caribbean Windward Islands, and Belize. Raced in the International Rolex Cup (St. Thomas USVI), BVI Spring Regatta, San Francisco Big Boat Series, San Diego Yachting Cup and Newport Ensenada Race. American Red Cross certificates in First Aid and CPR/AED.


George Boyd:

Began sailing by taking lessons from Redondo Beach Parks & Recreation Department in 1985. Took all of the Lido 14 classes and Coronado 15 classes. Hold certificates from ASA for the following: ASA 101, 103, 104 and 105. Hold certificates from the U.S. Coast Guard for Boating Skills & Seamanship and Coastal Navigation. Have owned both a Catalina 34’ and a Catalina 27’ sailboat. Have cruised all over Southern California and done a bareboat charter in the British Virgin Islands. Have raced every major race in Southern California taking Second Place in PHRF K class for the Newport to Ensenada race in 2005. Took 1st place in the Redondo Beach Yacht Clubs Summer Horizon Series in 2005 which was a best of 14 races. Also took 1st place in the King Harbor to Queen Mary Regatta in 2005.
