What is the Pay to Stay Program?
The Redondo Beach Police Department Pay to Stay Program gives qualified men and women the opportunity to serve their mandatory incarceration in the Redondo Beach jail as an alternative to serving their sentence in the Los Angeles County Jail.  This program is available to men and women who have been convicted of most non-violent crimes, and the sentencing court has given them permission to serve their sentence in a city jail. 

Am I eligible to stay in the Redondo Beach jail Stay to Pay?

  • Your eligibility to participate in the Redondo Beach jail Stay to Pay Program is contingent on the following conditions:
    1. You are not sentenced for a violent felony or violent misdemeanor crime.
    2. You are not sentenced for destruction of jail property.
    3. You are not sentenced for an offense against a police officer or other public safety employee.
    4. You do not have a history of violence.
    5. You are not a sex, drug or arson registrant.
    6. You will sign an agreement to adhere to the Redondo Beach Jail Rules and Conditions of Confinement while in the jail.
    7. You will sign a waiver relieving the City of Redondo Beach from any expenses associated with emergency or non-emergency medical treatment needed or requested by the individual while in custody.
    8. You do not have medical problems that would require you to visit a doctor.
    9. You can provide proof of valid medical insurance that must remain in effect for the duration of the scheduled incarceration.
    10. You do not have an infectious disease.
    11. You have a recent tuberculosis (TB) screening test with negative results taken within 90 days of starting your confinement by a verifiable clinic or physician.
    12. You do not require the administration of multiple medications during your stay.
    13. You have the approval of the sentencing court to serve your jail time in a city jail facility.
    14. You have a Court Commitment Order specifying the number of days to be served, any specified consecutive days or intervals and specifically stating that your sentence may be served at a city jail.
    15. You have valid government photo identification (driver license, identification card, or passport)
    16. You are able to pay $198.00 per day, in full for all days to be served, on your check-in date/surrender.

How do I arrange to serve my time in the Redondo Beach jail?

  • Ask the court to allow you to serve your sentence in a city jail facility when you are sentenced.
  • Ask for a Court Commitment Order that:
    1. States your name
    2. Identifies the plea charge
    3. States the length of the sentence to be served and defines any "time served" credit that you may have
    4. Specifies any increments of custody at the direction of the court (consecutive days or intervals between days)
    5. Includes that your time may be served in a city jail facility.

May I receive telephone calls or personal mail while I am serving my Pay to Stay time?

  • No.
  • You may not receive telephone calls or personal mail while you are in custody.
  • You may have access to a telephone in your cell that will allow you to place unlimited collect calls to others.

What does the Redondo Beach Pay to Stay Program cost?

  • The cost of the Pay to Stay Program is $198.00 for each 12-24 hour day. 
  • All fees must be paid in cash or with a cashier’s check only. 
  • You should have the exact amount for your stay, as we may be unable to provide change. 

How do I apply, and what documents will I need when I submit my application?

  • You will need a completed Redondo Beach Police Pay to Stay application and packet as noted below.
  • Print a copy of the application by clicking here, or
  • Call the Jail Unit at (310) 318-0616 to request an application packet.  This will include the following forms which you must complete and sign when you submit them:
    1. Redondo Beach Police Conditions of Confinement form
    2. Redondo Beach Police Medical Questionnaire form
    3. Redondo Beach Police Authorized Items form
    4. A tuberculosis (TB) screening test for you that is negative and that has been taken within 90 days of starting your confinement by a verifiable clinic or physician.
    5. The Court Committal document

You may submit your documents to the jail staff 24 hours a day at the Redondo Beach Police Department, 401 Diamond Street, Redondo Beach or mail them to:

How soon may I begin my stay after I submit my application?
You may usually begin your stay within one to two weeks after submitting your application, and if you are accepted to the Pay to Stay Program.

How is my jail time calculated?

  • The court may sentence you to serve:
    1. Straight time: serving the sentence on consecutive days
    2. Weekends: serving the sentence on consecutive days on weekends
    3. Work furlough: serving the sentence at night or opposite your normal work hours
  • A 12-24 hour period constitutes one day of served time based on the instruction of the court.
  • Example: If you have a three day sentence, you would arrive in the jail at 5:00 p.m. Monday and leave at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
  • You may not serve more than four consecutive days (96 hours) at a time with at least three days between days served.

What personal property may I bring with me?

  • You may bring a change of underclothes, reading material, prescription glasses or contact lenses and solution. 
  • You must bring these items to the jail in a plastic or paper bag with your name on it.

What clothes may I bring and keep while in the Redondo Beach Jail Pay to Stay Program?

  • You may bring
  • One change of undergarments for each day served.
  • One change of clothes for stays longer than two days. 
  • Shower shoes
  • Photo identification

May I bring reading material?

  • You may bring:
    1. Books
    2. Magazines
    3. Newspapers
    4. Note: Pornographic materials are not permitted.

May I wear jewelry while I am in custody?
No, but you may keep an inexpensive watch.

What should I not bring?

  • Do not bring clothing with drawstrings; they must be removed.
  • Do not bring belts; they must be removed.
  • Do not bring cigarettes, chewing tobacco, gum, candy or other food. 

Will I be housed with other inmates that have been recently arrested?

  • No.
  • You will be housed separate from other inmates and will have minimum contact with the regular inmate population. 
  • You may be housed with other Pay to Stay inmates if certain conditions in the jail occur.

May I bring multiple prescription medications to take while I am in custody?

  • No.  However, the Jail Manager will discuss medication options with you during the application process. 

May I keep my laptop, cell phone, iPod  or other electronic devices with me in the jail?
No.  Electronic devices are not allowed in the jail.

May I have visitors?

  • You may have one visit every other day (more than one person may visit together during the visit).
  • Pay to Stay inmates may have up to two and a half hours of visits per week. 
    • Between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
    • Between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
  • Visitors should make an appointment with the jail staff for the visit at least one half hour before visiting hours begin by calling (310) 318-0616.

May I see a cell in-person before after I apply to pay and stay in the jail?

  • No.
  • However, photos of the jail are available.

What will happen if I fail to adhere to the rules and regulations of the Redondo Beach Jail, or if I fail to follow the direction of police personnel or jail staff?
You will be released from custody, and you will forfeit all fees paid to the City of Redondo Beach.

What will happen if I falsify the information on my Pay to Stay application?
You will be released from custody and you will forfeit all fees paid to the City of Redondo Beach.

Does the Redondo Beach Jail accept work furlough sentences from the court?

  • Yes.
  • Court orders that allow work furlough must specify the days of the week and the times that the court has granted work furlough. 
  • The Redondo Beach Police Department jail staff will release inmates at 6:00 a.m. and will accept them no later than 7:00 p.m.
  • These times may be adjusted based on non-business hour work schedules.
