Major Injury Traffic Collision
On May
21, at about 9:49 p.m., the Redondo Beach Communications Center received a call
regarding an injury traffic collision at Pacific Coast Highway and Avenue A.
Officers responded to the scene and discovered two vehicles had been involved in
a head on collision. There were single occupants in each vehicle and both were
trapped in their respective vehicles. Redondo Beach Fire paramedics responded to
the scene to attend to the injured parties.
The
initial investigation revealed that thirty-four (34) year old Monique Lashawn
Bailey, from Palmdale, California, was driving a 1993 Dodge Grand Caravan,
northbound in the center lane of Pacific Coast Highway, approaching Avenue A.
Twenty-nine (29) year old Jeffery Kevin Leyh, from Torrance, California, was
driving a 1996 Toyota Corolla, southbound in the lane next to the curb, on
Pacific Coast Highway. Based on statements from driver Bailey and several
witnesses, driver Bailey fell asleep and her vehicle crossed over the center
lane into oncoming traffic. One southbound driver was able to avoid a collision
with Bailey’s vehicle, but Leyh’s vehicle collided with Bailey’s head on.
Both
drivers were extracted from their vehicles by Redondo Beach Fire paramedics and
treated at the scene for their injuries. Driver Bailey was transported to
Torrance Memorial Hospital where she was treated for abrasions and contusions.
Driver Leyh was transported to Harbor General Hospital where he was treated for
severe head and chest injuries. His condition was reported by Dr. Rajad to be
“extremely critical”.
