15th Annual K-9 Competition
The
Fifteenth Annual Redondo Beach Police K-9 Competition was held on Friday and
Saturday, May 11th and 12th, at three venues: the Redondo Beach Harbor, Frank
Scotto Towing and the Redondo Union High School Sea Hawk Bowl. Officers and
their canine partners from twenty-one agencies competed for honors in several
categories. The contestants included law enforcement canine teams from Los
Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, Kern and Tulare Counties, a team from Pantego,
Texas, as well as teams from the United States Marine Corps. The Friday
narcotics event tested the search capabilities of twenty-five narcotic dogs. Los
Angeles Police Canine “Archie”, handled by Officer Sergio Aloma, won first place
in the narcotics competition.
The
competition for patrol dogs began with a search at the storage yard of Frank
Scotto Tow on Friday evening. It concluded on Saturday with four events at
Redondo Union High School Sea Hawk Bowl: a Box Search that tested the skill of
the dogs to find a person hiding in boxes, obedience, agility and manwork.
Thirty-five dogs competed for the honor of “Top Dog”. Deputy Jay Brock from
Tulare County Sheriff Department and his partner canine “Jacko” won top honors
as the overall champion.
Chief Mel
Nichols expressed appreciation for the public support of the competition and for
fund raising efforts to replace one dog recently retired from the Redondo Beach
Police Department.
