The Investigations Division includes six units which provide support to other police programs and operations. The Investigations Division is assigned to the Operations Bureau. A Lieutenant is assigned to serve as the Investigations Division Commander. Two Sergeants, one to supervise the Special Investigations Unit (S.I.U.) and one to supervise Property, Persons, and Juvenile Investigations are also assigned.
The preliminary investigation process is a function that is performed by uniformed personnel. Generally, the follow up investigation process is performed by non-uniformed sworn personnel assigned to the Investigations Division. The overall objective of the preliminary and follow-up investigations is to identify, apprehend, and successfully prosecute the offender.
Investigators are assigned to the various investigative components based on their specialized skills, knowledge and ability.
Adult Investigations
The Redondo Beach Police Department investigates a variety of crimes. The Adult Investigations section of the Investigations Division has six Detectives who investigate Violent crimes, Sex crimes and Property Crimes for adult suspects.
The crimes against persons unit investigates numerous crimes including: homicides, armed robberies, assaults, sexual assaults, suicides and missing adults.
The crimes against property unit investigates auto theft, check fraud, burglaries and other crime not listed elsewhere.
Juvenile Investigations
The Redondo Beach Police Department investigates a variety of crimes. The Juvenile Investigations section of the Investigations Division has two Detectives who investigate crimes committed by juveniles.
The Juvenile Investigations Unit shall be responsible for physical child abuse and unfit home investigations, runaway juveniles and all criminal investigations involving juvenile suspects, except those handled by the School Resource Officers.
Special Investigations
The Special Investigations Unit investigates all vice related activities, such as prostitution and gambling, narcotics violations, organized crime activity, gang activity, A.B.C. Violations and other special assignments as assigned.
High Technology & Computer Crime
Established in 2000, the High Technology & Computer Crime Unit staffed by a full time Police Detective, investigates crimes relating to the internet, computer
scams, and other high technology situations.
