Water Quality Task Force Archive

Clean water is one of the keys to maintaining the health, safety and economic well-being of our residents, business and visitors. As a coastal community with a harbor, beach and regional storm water facilities, Redondo Beach has unique challenges to protecting our surface waters and ocean water quality. Mayor Mike Gin and Councilman Chris Cagle formed a Water Quality Task Force to address these issues. The purpose of the Task Force is to improve the public’s knowledge of water quality issues as well as encourage best practices to protect the environment, the public’s health and the visitor serving local economy. Authorized by the City Council in July of 2005, the work of the Task Force concluded in a 118 page recommendations report in July 2006. The membership of the group was made up of 15 people appointed by the Mayor who represented various segments of the community:

2. Councilman Chris Cagle - City Representatives

3. Don Mueller - Redondo Beach Boaters Association

4. Rafael Fernandez - The Boaters Advisory Panel

5. Ann Dalkey - Biologist and Redondo Beach Resident

6. Mary Delehanty Resident

7. Ann Garten - Chamber of Commerce

8. Trevor Christianson - Youth Commission

9. Mary Simun – Biology Teacher Redondo Union High School

10. Alex Bannerman - Harbor Commission
11. Shane Michael - Harbor Commission
a. Richard Cameron - Harbor Commission, alternate
b. Trish Murakawa – Harbor Commission, alternate
12. Tony Cordi – Harbor Business, Harbor Drive Restaurant
13. Sean Guthrie – Harbor Business - Marina Operator
14. Dick Acker - Harbor Business-Rocky Point King Harbor
15. Brent Scheiwe - Non Profit Organization -The Sea Lab


The Task Force was broken up into 5 subcommittees with the following goals and responsibilities:
a) Subcommittee 9a.

Provide recommendations to the City Council for action toward solving current immediate problems found in the harbor and waterfront area.

b) Subcommittee 9b.

Provide recommendations to the City Council for a long term Clean Harbor and Waterfront plan.

c) Subcommittee 9c.

Provide recommendations to the City Council for a Community Outreach public education program.

d) Subcommittee 9d.

Identify Funding Opportunities

e) Subcommittee 9e.

Provide recommendations to the City Council for establishing a long term harbor volunteer program with procedures for dealing with emergency issues such as red tides.
